Highland Games

Scotland’s Highland games

Dating back over 300 years, Highland games have their origins in the Scottish Clan system as Clan Chiefs would encourage their men to take part in feats of skill and strength to prove their capabilities in battle. The Highland games we see today still include the competitive elements but with the addition of piping, Highland dancing and fantastic local food now featuring on the programmes.

You can watch displays of immense strength in the heavy events, such as caber tossing, throwing the hammer and tug o’ war, and witness skill and speed in the track and field events. Enjoy the colourful costumes and fantastic footwork in the Highland dance competitions and experience the haunting effect of bagpipes during the piping displays, all with stunning Scottish scenery providing a breathtaking backdrop.

The Highland games season runs from May to September with events held across Scotland. There are large, televised competitions that attract members of the Royal Family such as the Braemar Gathering, and small, community run events throughout the villages that allow you to immerse yourself in some authentic Scottish culture.

City of Inverness Highland games is the biggest in Northern Scotland and is a real highlight on the games calendar. Coinciding with the Highlands Armed Forces Day, you are guaranteed an unforgettable experience. Watch a remarkable crowd of pipe and drum bands march through the streets with armed forces veterans and cadets before the afternoon entertainment of the Highland games begins.

Travel to Stirling to take part in the Kinlochard Rob Roy Mini Highland games, a smaller event that offers an insight into Scottish village culture. Along with the traditional Highland games events you will experience battle re-enactments, amusements and even water events on Loch Ard.
