Scottish Dancing and Ceilidhs
Ceilidhs, a traditional Scottish dance, have long played an important role in Scotland’s social and cultural life, particularly at special occasions such as weddings. They provide a fun opportunity for visitors and locals to come together and dance to lively yet simple Scottish country dances where the steps are easy to learn.
Popular ceilidh dances include the Flying Scotsman, Gay Gordons, Strip the Willow and the Dashing White Sergeant, to name just a few. Put your skills to the test, take your partner by the hand and spin across the floor to the instantly memorable tunes. Usually a member of the band will talk everybody through the steps first, allowing beginners to join in the fun.
Music is provided by a traditional ceilidh band with instruments including fiddles, accordions and drums and there are several venues around the country which regularly host ceilidhs. During the summer months, you can often take part in these ceilidh dances to mark the end of Highland games.
Even if you don’t want to participate, why not sit back and watch the vibrant and fun displays? Make sure you check with local VisitScotland Information Centers for events taking place throughout the year.
